The language behavior of Ukrainians living abroad differs from that of those living in Ukraine. This is reflected in the findings of a study conducted by the Think Ukraine analytical center.
In particular, the share of Russian language use in everyday communication increases abroad.
Research Findings
30.7% of Ukrainians abroad speak Russian at home.
In Ukraine — 17.0%.
Ukrainian is spoken by:
- 50.0% abroad
- 67.2% in Ukraine
Use of Russian-language resources:
- Internet content — 13.1% abroad vs. 9.1% in Ukraine
- Media — 4.5% vs. 4.8%
What This Means
The linguistic environment abroad affects the everyday communication habits of Ukrainians. At the same time, this does not lead to a significant increase in the consumption of Russian informational content.
What Should Be Taken Into Account
Supporting the Ukrainian language abroad remains important, especially among children and young people.
